Thanksgiving Day Protests

"Locals protest growing trend of 'Gray Thursday'"

Many are protesting against the decision by Walmart and other major retailers to open on Thanksgiving Day.

Good that people care about these workers having to work that day. However, I don't hear them complaining about convenience store employees, the participants and workers with the Macy's Parade, or the football players and supporting personnel.

THANKS

On this Thanksgiving Day, 2013, I give these thanks –

Thanks to my parents, for giving me decent genes that have gotten me this far.
Thanks to my children, for turning out so well, despite patches of dysfunction and poor parenting.
Thanks to Gwen, for being the angel who has made my life an absolute paradise

Supreme Ct.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a pair of cases on whether corporations may refuse on religious grounds to provide coverage for birth control.

This is scary, given the conservative nature of this court, which, in the Citizens United case, conferred free speech rights on corporations and invalidated wise campaign finance laws. Might it give them religion?

In one of the cases, Hobby Lobby, a privately owned corporation that employs 13,000 people of all faiths — and, presumably, some of no faith — in its 500 craft stores says that requiring it to pay for contraception violates its religious beliefs — that is, the beliefs of its owners, the Green family.

If the court decides that a corporation, an inanimate entity created by the state that is engaged in the field of commerce, can have religion, does it follow that it can ignore the law? If so, could ignore civil rights laws and refuse to hire muslims, or atheists?
